DEEP THINKER Before the marine adventures of William Beebe, no human had descended more than 350 feet into the ocean. Beebe and his benefactor, Otis Barton, used an airtight bathysphere suspended on a cable to plunge as deep as 3,000 feet.They accomplished this on 16 separate occasions in the early 1930s. Bradford Matsen reads from his account of their adventures,”Descent: The Heroic Discovery of the Abyss” (Pantheon).
