MODEL 8 Filmmaker Yan-Ting Yuen participates in a question-and-answer session after a screening of his film “Yang Ban Xi: The Model 8 Works.” The film blends archival footage of Cultural Revolution-era propaganda musicals with interviews with Chinese baby boomers. The only form of art allowed after traditional opera was banned by Mao’s wife, eight of the most popular “revolutionary operas” were termed “the 8 Model Works.” They were filmed in Technicolor and catapaulted their actors to movie stardom. ISRAEL THROUGH THE YEARS BAM cinematek presents “Israel on Film,” a series depicting portraits of Israel from the past 50 years. The series includes a documentary about Ariel Sharon, Hollywood epics such as “Exodus,” and a film about punk-rock Jewish rebellion.
