DANCE
BATTLE’S NIGHT If vigorous, riotous dancing is your cup of tea (or, maybe, your can of Red Bull), go to see Battleworks Dance Company perform a program in five parts: “Reel Time,” “Juba,” “Ella,” “In/Side,” and “Overture.” In his newest work, “Reel Time,” choreographer Robert Battle explores social behaviors by deconstructing folk dances to an original score by John King. “Juba” is an athletic take on shamanistic ecstatic dancing, with plenty of foot stomping and hand-slapping. A solo performance, “Ella,” is a frenzied homage to the passionate rhythms of Ella Fitzgerald. To calm things down, “In/Side,” another solo, is a lyrical meditation on longing and rejection, with music by Nina Simone. Completing the repertoire is a Battleworks favorite, “Overture,” in which dancers writhe and convulse violently to a languid score by Bach. Mr. Battle, a Florida native, was proclaimed a “Master of African-American Choreography” by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2005, and he was recently honored with the Princess Grace Statue Award for achievements in choreography. 7:30 p.m., Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Ave. at 19th Street, 212-242-0800, $34 general, $26 members, $20 students and seniors.
