IN PRAISE OF STEVENS The Metropolitan Opera Guild and Opera News honor mezzo soprano Rise Stevens. Pianist Van Cliburn and mezzo soprano Jennifer Larmore serve as co-hosts, and the event features appearances by Barbara Cook, Denyce Graves, Kitty Carlisle Har t, Anna Moffo, and Patrice Munsel. MIDTOWN MEDIEVAL Midtown Concerts presents a short afternoon program of music from 12th- and 13th-century Spain and France. The medieval-music ensemble Machicoti, which consists of vocalists Amy Bartram, Grace Check, and Beth Cullinane, performs the concert. TWO QUARTETS The Avalon String Quartet performs two programs of string quartets by Schonberg, Beethoven, and Webern. EYE ON THE SPARROW Rejoicensemble’s 10th annual celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. features David Hurd’s “In Honor of Martin,” a five-movement work with text based on the Jamie McKenzie poem “Standing Tall.” Also on the program: the world premiere of Carl Maultsby’s “Eye of the Sparrow,” the musical component of a slide show of paintings by artist Karen Fitzgerald.
