AFRICAN SOUNDS Modiba Afrikast Live! a new monthly party presented every first Wednesday, makes its debut on the Lower East Side. This month’s theme is “Dancing for Darfur,” featuring video art installations about Darfur activism, and performances by local musicians and DJs, including Kwame Akbar and drummers Yoshi Takemasa and Baye Kouyate. GIVING BACK Cutting Edge Concerts starts off its 2006 season with “Giving Back,” three concerts featuring new works by living composers.The first two programs will include works by Katherine Hoover, Jeffrey Mumford, Richard Wernick, Victoria Bond (Thursday), and Allen Cohen, Matthew Greenbaum, Patricia Morehead, and Allen Shaw (April 20). Newband will play the music of Harry Partch and Dean Drummond at the final concert (April 27).
