SYNAGOGUE STORIES Rabbi Marc Angel discusses the history of his synagogue, Congregation Shearith Israel, America’s first Jewish congregation. He is the author of “Remnant of Israel” (Riverside), a history of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue. Before the discussion, attendees can attend a special viewing of the ongoing exhibit “Tolerance and Identity: Jews in Early New York, 1654-1825.” The exhibit spans the arrival by boat of 23 Jewish refugees in New Amsterdam to the formation of the city’s second synagogue, B’nai Jeshurun. A reception and book signing follow.
