PLANET EARTH Scientific American magazine and the Earth Institute at Columbia University present “Crossroads for Planet Earth,” a symposium on global development. There are two panels: “The Challenges of a Changing Planet,” moderated by the director of the U.N. Millennium Project, Jeffrey Sachs; and “The Way Forward: Effective Policies To Achieve Sustainable Development,” moderated by the editor in chief of Scientific American, John Rennie. ANIMAL INSTINCT One of the founders of the modern animal rights movement, Princeton professor and author Peter Singer,discusses and signs the essay collection “In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave” (Blackwell), which he edited. The anthology collects works by philosophers and activists on the new ways of measuring animal suffering. WRONG INFO The Disinformation Company offers a night of discussion, art, and film, “Everything You Know Is Wrong.” Contributors include artist Paul Laffoley, performance artist Kembra Pfahler, and “weird science” expert Duncan Laurie, who will speak on such topics as science fiction-oriented paintings and plant communication.
