SHAKESPEARE AND MORE The Play Outside! Festival includes 10 different outdoor productions across all five boroughs. The selections range from a classic tragic romance (“Romeo and Juliet”) to a modern satire about a land developer trying to build a sports stadium on the Upper West Side (“Field of Schemes”). The series is presented by the Shakespeare Project. Tonight through Sunday, September 25, performance times and locations vary, 212-629-4994, free. PHILADELPHIA STORY First produced on Broadway in 1964, Brian Friel’s “Philadelphia, Here I Come!” is the story of a young Irishman who, after a string of bad luck, accepts an invitation from his aunt to live with her in Philadelphia. The comedy, which closes this weekend, is directed by Ciaran O’Reilly. Through Sunday, tonight and tomorrow, 8 p.m., Saturday, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday, 3 p.m., Irish Repertory Theatre, 132 W. 22nd St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, 212-727-2737, $45 and $50.


TWO BY THE BARD The Thriftshop Theatre Workshop presents abridged versions of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “Hamlet.” Directed by Nina Pinchin, “Twelfth Night” (3 p.m.) is performed in vaudevillian style, while “Hamlet” (5 p.m.) is set in a New York crime family during the Prohibition era. Both performances: Saturday and Sunday, Tobacco Warehouse, Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, along the East River between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, Brooklyn, free.


OCCUPATION The Jean Cocteau Repertory presents a translation of Bertolt Brecht’s play “Mother Courage,” directed by David Fuller. The play was inspired by the Nazi invasion of Poland, and the main character is a peddler trying to keep her family together during wartime in the 17th century. Through Saturday, October 8, Wednesday, 7 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, 8 p.m., Sunday, 3 p.m., Bouwerie Lane Theatre, 330 Bowery, between Bond and 2nd streets, 212-279-4200, $50.
