Christiane Amanpour Calls For ‘Truthfulness’ as She Resigns From CNN After Herself Misleading Viewers

Christiane Amanpour, one of CNN’s most recognizable faces for more than four decades, announced Monday that she is leaving the network after 43 years. The 68-year-old journalist said she will remain at CNN until next June.“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” Ms. Amanpour said in a statement. She added that she “looks forward to interesting new projects down the line, and will always be rooting for CNN and maintaining its history of independent journalism. Remember: always be truthful, not neutral.”Ms. Amanpour rose to prominence covering the Bosnian War in the 1990s, a period that also marked the beginning of sustained criticism over her reporting methods. Colleagues and media watchdogs have long accused her of abandoning journalistic neutrality in favor of advocacy. An unnamed CNN insider told The New York Times at the time that Ms. Amanpour had declared on air that Serbs had “probably” carried out the 1994 Markale marketplace bombing — a claim later disputed by a United Nations-classified report that pointed instead to Bosnian Muslim forces. Ms. Amanpour has never corrected the record on air, according to critics.Ms. Amanpour, who also reported from conflict zones in Rwanda, Ukraine, Iran, and Afghanistan, has defended her approach to objectivity throughout her career. “When you’re neutral in a situation like Bosnia, you are an accomplice — an accomplice to genocide,” she told The Guardian in 1996.Her coverage of the Middle East has drawn similarly persistent criticism. The watchdog group CAMERA and others have accused her of consistently tilting blame toward Israel, including her 2007 documentary series “God’s Warriors,” which equated Jewish and Christian movements with radical Islamist extremism.Critics, including former ZOA president Morton Klein and commentator Dan Abrams, called the series biased and poorly sourced.Ms. Amanpour also drew backlash last October after saying on air that surviving Israeli hostages were “probably being treated better than the average Gazan, because they are the pawns and the chips that Hamas had.” She later apologized, calling the remark “insensitive and wrong.”Three separate incidents spanning five years raise more questions about accuracy and framing in the veteran journalist’s coverage of sensitive geopolitical events. The Soroka Medical Center Strike in June 2025. Ms. Amanpour initially reported that an Iranian ballistic missile struck “near a hospital” in Beer Sheva. Media monitors flagged the error, noting the missile had directly hit Soroka Medical Center and destroyed its surgical ward. CNN later corrected the reports to reflect the direct strike. The Marwan Barghouti Interview in 2021. Ms. Amanpour faced criticism for describing Barghouti, convicted mastermind of Second Intifada terror attacks serving multiple life sentences, as simply a “Palestinian activist and leader,” without mentioning his conviction. And the Kristallnacht Comparison in November 2020. Ms. Amanpour opened a global affairs segment by likening the Trump administration’s “assault on facts, knowledge, history, and truth” to Kristallnacht, the 1938 Nazi pogrom against German Jews. The remark drew international backlash and apology demands from the Israeli government and civic groups. Ms. Amanpour later apologized on air, saying: “I should not have juxtaposed the two thoughts. Hitler’s evil stands alone in history… I regret any pain my statement may have caused.”The announcement that the presenter is stepping down comes weeks after Paramount Skydance completed its acquisition of CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that has unsettled the newsroom. Ms. Amanpour made no direct reference to the ownership change in her departure note, but media observers have speculated that friction with Skydance CEO David Ellison played a role. Some industry observers suggest Ms. Amanpour’s exit is tied to cost-cutting under the network’s new leadership, which is managing billions in merger-related debt; her salary is reported to be in the millions. Others point to her health, noting that she scaled back her schedule in January 2025 after revealing her ovarian cancer, first diagnosed in 2021, had returned for a third time.Ms. Amanpour voiced unease over the takeover back in May, pointing to the shakeup Mr. Ellison engineered at CBS News after installing Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief. “I’m concerned based on what’s happened to the other things that he’s taken over already, like CBS News,” Ms. Amanpour said at the time, citing what she described as “hemorrhaging viewers” and “this ideological realignment of CBS.”CNN chairman Mark Thompson confirmed the departure in a memo to staff Monday morning, writing that he and Ms. Amanpour had been discussing the decision “for some months.” He called her “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere” and said the network would take time to celebrate her contributions before she departs next year.
