Cracks in the AI Boom? Top Voices Start to Question Whether The Moment Meets the Hype

Faith in generative artificial intelligence as the defining technology of the modern era is beginning to waver. After years of record-breaking investment, trillion-dollar valuations, and sweeping promises about what AI will deliver, a growing number of prominent voices are questioning whether the product actually can work.The skepticism is no longer limited to fringe critics. It’s coming from analysts, investors, and — most tellingly — the executives building the systems.Palantir CEO Alex Karp said he is not sold on the power of AI. “Something has gone completely wrong,” he said, voicing a sarcastic take on how the current AI system works. “The basic view among enterprises in this country is ‘I’m going to chillax and waste my time with tokens. I’m going to get no value, and they’re going to get my IP.'”Mark Zuckerberg’s recent comments carry a different kind of weight. In a leaked town hall recording obtained by Reuters, the Meta CEO acknowledged that the company’s AI ambitions are falling significantly short — despite committing $145 billion to AI infrastructure this year alone.“The trajectory of the agentic development over at least the last four months hasn’t really accelerated in the way that we expected,” Mr. Zuckerberg told employees, adding that the timing of the company’s AI-related reorganization was miscalculated and that the plan had yet to “come to fruition.”Technology analyst and journalist Ed Zitron has been among the loudest and most detailed critics of generative AI’s economics. In a recent CNBC appearance that quickly went viral, Mr. Zitron laid out what he sees as a fundamental flaw at the heart of the industry.“Open AI burned $20.9 billion in 2025,” he said, citing audited financials reported by the Financial Times. “The problem with these companies is their margins are getting worse, and their costs increase linearly with their revenues. There is no proof that they can improve their margins.”The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, pointedly disagrees. “AI is the most powerful technology humanity has ever created,” he said. “Generative AI is not a replacement for human creativity, but rather a tool that can augment and enhance it.”As caution emerges, AI companies continue with a bullish outlook. Bloomberg News reports that tech companies have sold more than $335 billion — more than twice the levels seen in 2025 — in bonds globally to fund their projects. On Tuesday, Amazon raised an additional $41 billion through bond sales, including 40- and 50-year debt, to bring its bond sales to fund AI production to $107 billion this year. However, the outlet noted that Tuesday’s sale was less enthusiastic than a bond auction earlier this year. On Wednesday, Business Insider reported that internal planning documents from Amazon showed that its latest upgrades to its agentic assistant, Alexa, have been much more costly than previously anticipated.Mr. Zitron’s concerns extend beyond the current AI industry, saying it is propped up by big tech companies that have simply run out of genuinely new growth ideas and are pouring money into AI to mask that fact.“The only reason big tech is investing in this is that they’ve run out of hypergrowth ideas,” he said. “They don’t have a new iPhone, they don’t have a new Google search, so they’ve put over a trillion dollars into a kind of a dead-end industry.”He was equally pointed about AI companies’ relationship with enterprise customers, arguing that tools like ChatGPT and Claude are structured to encourage spending rather than deliver measurable value. “These companies don’t charge on outcomes, they don’t charge on success, because you can’t with large language models. They’re inherently hallucination-prone… they encourage waste.”On where this ends, Mr. Zitron pointed to one clear signal: “When data center debt stops being issued, that will be when it’s bedtime for this industry.”
