‘Democrats Should Take This Seriously’: Reality TV Star Spencer Pratt Goes Viral With Campaign Ad Targeting L.A.’s Political Class

American reality TV star turned Los Angeles mayoral candidate, Spencer Pratt, is going after California’s political establishment in a new campaign video, accusing its leaders of living lavishly while their constituents suffer the consequences of failed governance and the Los Angeles wildfires. Mr. Pratt posted the campaign ad Wednesday on X and it has already amassed millions of views and tens of thousands of likes. The clip opens with him standing before LA’s official mayoral residence, the Getty House mansion, declaring: “This is where Mayor Bass lives. You notice something?” The camera then pans to a neighboring property. “Or here, where Nithya Raman’s $3 million mansion sits,” Mr. Pratt says of the Los Angeles City Councilwoman’s home.“They don’t have to live in the mess they created — where you live,” he says, walking past a homeless encampment. The clip then cuts to Mr. Pratt standing in front of an RV parked in an outdoor lot.“This is where I live. They let my home burn down. I know what the consequences of failed leadership are. That’s why I’m running for mayor.”The 42-year-old star of the MTV series “The Hills” announced his mayoral bid in January, on the one-year anniversary of the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfires, which killed 12 people and destroyed more than 6,000 residential properties. Mr. Pratt and his wife, fellow reality TV personality Heidi Montag, were among those who lost their homes in the blaze. He has since emerged as a sharp critic of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass over their handling of the fires.Mr. Pratt is registered as a Republican, though he has sought to distance himself from political labels, calling the race “non-partisan.” His affiliation may nonetheless prove a liability in the heavily Democratic city.His latest ad, at least, is making a splash online. “I’m telling you this guy is going to win,” conservative commentator Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Senator John McCain, posted on X. The Vice President for External Affairs at the Edmund Burke Foundation, Will Chamberlain, reckoned that “This might be the best 30-second campaign ad I’ve ever seen.” A Democratic political strategist, Keith Edwards, describing it as a “good ad,” warned that “Democrats should take this seriously.” Mr. Pratt’s campaign received a further boost this week after TMZ reported that the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jeanie Buss, donated $1,800 to his campaign — the maximum allowed amount under local election laws.
