DOJ Bars IRS From Ever Looking Into Trump’s Taxes Again as Part of ‘Weaponization’ Settlement

President Trump and his family will never again be audited by the Internal Revenue Service thanks to the president’s legal settlement with the Department of Justice. After announcing the creation of a $1.776 billion fund to compensate victims of legal “weaponization,” the acting attorney general quietly signed an order protecting Mr. Trump from future investigations into his taxes. Mr. Trump agreed to settle his case with the IRS after the DOJ set up the weaponization fund which was announced Monday. The fund will be used to pay money to those who claim that they were victims of weaponized justice systems during the Biden administration. During a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance said anyone would be allowed to request monetary compensation. He specifically mentioned Hunter Biden as someone who would be eligible to apply, given Mr. Biden was prosecuted during his own father’s term by a Trump-nominated federal prosecutor. Mr. Vance declined to say if those who assaulted police officers on January 6, 2021, would be barred from receiving money. According to a one-page memo signed by acting attorney general Todd Blanche, Mr. Trump will get an additional benefit from settling the case. The memo states that the IRS is hereby “forever barred” from pursuing information about the Trump family’s tax returns. The extraordinary protection granted to the president and his family immediately raised eyebrows among legal experts and on Capitol Hill. The top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Richard Neal — who previously fought to gain access to the president’s tax returns — lambasted the audit protections and the anti-weaponization fund. “This settlement is corruption in the plainest sight: forcing [the] IRS to abandon every audit, past and present, into Trump, his family, and their businesses while steering $1.8 billion in taxpayer dollars toward his friends, cronies, and Trump-affiliated companies is self-dealing at its most grotesque,” Mr. Neal wrote. Appearing before members of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Mr. Blanche admitted that the $1.8 billion payout fund and the fact that Mr. Trump will influence how those settlements are reached is unprecedented. “There’s a lot of things that President Trump is the first of,” Mr. Blanche said, defending the arrangement. “The President is now exempt from our tax laws while everyone else has to obey them. Got it,” Senator Chris Murphy, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, wrote on X. It’s just mind blowing that [this] is what’s happening in America.”Even the anti-weaponization payout fund itself is not receiving the warmest welcome from Republican leaders. The Senate majority leader, Senator John Thune — known for his stoic nature — did not seem pleased that the fund was being set up. “Not a big fan. And I’m not sure exactly how they intend to use it,” Mr. Thune told reporters Tuesday morning. “I don’t see a purpose for that.”After news of the prohibition on IRS investigations into the Trump family had been announced, Mr. Thune again did not seem pleased. “There are and will continue to be a lot of questions around that that the administration is going to have to answer,” he said sternly at a press conference.
