The Sun’s New Look

The New York Sun

With today’s editions, the first of the year 2007, The New York Sun is being published with a page width that is rapidly becoming the standard in the American newspaper industry. The Washington Post went to this size a few years ago, the Wall Street Journal adopts it for today’s editions, and the New York Times has announced that it will follow suit later this summer. Readers have said they find this size easier to handle.

The adjustment in width is part of an evolution of the Sun. When the paper was launched by the current proprietors on April 16, 2002, it was with a front page that was the widest of any New York daily. That size was slimmed in conjunction with a redesign in the fall of 2002, a step with which our readers reported they were delighted. Today’s adjustment marks another step in the evolution of the Sun as we keep the paper in tune with contemporary sensibilities — and will put the Sun in line with the emerging standard for broadsheet advertisers and provide readers with a paper that is ideal to hold and read.

In conjunction with the changes in width, today’s New York Sun also introduces some new, sometimes subtle changes to freshen our headline- and body-type fonts. These changes are aimed at making the Sun more attractive to new and existing readers while delivering the high quality news, criticism, analysis, and opinion that we have always endeavored to provide. We welcome any feedback at editor@nysun.com, and we wish all our readers a 2007 full of happiness, security, prosperity, and freedom.
