European Leaders Rebuff Trump Demands for Military Help Re-Opening Strait of Hormuz

European allies are rebuffing President Trump’s demand that they help him reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely closed for more than a week due to the ongoing war with Iran. Mr. Trump says that NATO members will have a “very bad future” if they do not join with him to restart trade. Mr. Trump first called on Europeans to join American forces and secure the Strait in an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday. Appearing before reporters at the White House on Monday, Mr. Trump again made clear he wants NATO allies involved as soon as possible. “For 40 years we’re protecting you and you don’t wanna get involved in something that is very minor?” Mr. Trump said, recounting a conversation he apparently had with Europeans. “They said, ‘We’d rather not get involved.’”“I’ve been a big critic of all of the protecting of countries because I know that we’ll protect them and if ever needed — if we ever needed help — they wouldn’t be there for us,” he said. He also says he will be delaying a meeting with President Xi later this month as he attempts to pressure the Chinese government to help with reopening the Strait.The new demands from European allies are just the latest in a series of public lashings he has given to leaders on the continent. He started a trade war with the E.U. with his “Liberation Day” tariffs last year, sidelined European leaders from negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and has consistently demanded that Denmark hand over control of Greenland to the United States.Even before Mr. Trump made his demands on Sunday, the French government said no ships would be headed to the Strait in order to allow for trade to resume. In an interview with France 24, the country’s defense minister, Catherine Vautrin, said that President Macron would not send naval vessels to the Strait. The French government confirmed it was maintaining that position as of Monday, according to the French outlet RFI. Chancellor Merz of Germany was one of the first European leaders to say on Monday that his country would not be aiding Mr. Trump, citing the decision by America and Israel to keep Europeans out of the loop when they first made the decision to launch strikes against Iran. He says there is no security guarantee that requires or even justifies German involvement in the conflict. “We lack the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union or NATO required under the basic law. It was therefore clear from the outset that this war is not a matter for NATO,” Mr. Merz said at a press conference on Monday, according to a translation from the BBC. Prime Minister Starmer confirmed on Monday that the U.K would also not be joining any operations in the area. Mr. Trump said at a press conference on Monday that he had asked Mr. Starmer to send ships to help reopen the Strait weeks ago, but he refused. “I was not happy with the U.K.,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “While taking the necessary action to defend ourselves and our allies, we will not be drawn into the wider war,” Mr. Starmer told reporters in London on Monday, saying he was looking for a “swift resolution” to ensure Middle Eastern security. Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, told the Italian news agency ANSA on Monday that he does not believe his government will choose to get involved in securing the Strait of Hormuz, either. He says the Italian military is already involved in anti-piracy missions in the region, though those forces would not be used to secure trade routes amid the Iran war. “I don’t think these missions can be expanded to include the Strait of Hormuz, especially since they are defensive and anti-pirate missions,” Mr. Tajani said. According to a statement from a Greek government official, Greece will also stick with Italy in being involved only in defensive anti-piracy missions, rather than confronting Iran directly in the Strait of Hormuz. European officials made clear Monday that they are not even entirely sure what Mr. Trump wants out of them. Speaking at an EU meeting on Monday, Germany’s foreign minister says America and Israel have launched these attacks unilaterally, and should not expect unwavering support from allies who have been kept in the dark ahead of the operation. “We need more clarity here,” Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, told reporters, according to Al Jazeera. “We expect from the US and Israel to inform us, to include us into what they’re doing there and to tell us if these goals are achieved,” he continued. “Once we have a clear picture of that, we believe we need to move into the next phase, namely, defining a security architecture for this entire region, together with the neighbouring states.”Mr. Trump has given no clear timeline on when exactly these military operations could end, saying multiple times in recent days that the war had already been won, but also that it would have to go on for some time until a compliant regime materializes. He said last week that the individuals whom he had hoped would lead the new government were all killed in the American and Israeli strikes. His frustration goes beyond just the allies who are not sending ships or rockets to help topple the regime or solidify control of the Strait. On Sunday, he sent out a lengthy Truth Social post accusing journalists of falling for AI-generated videos and photos created by the Iranians, which he says should be a crime. “The story was knowingly FAKE and, in a certain way, you can say that those Media Outlets that generated it should be brought up on Charges for TREASON for the dissemination of false information!” Mr. Trump wrote, referring to the recent claim made by Iran that it had struck the USS Abraham Lincoln. “The fact is, Iran is being decimated, and the only battles they ‘win’ are those that they create through AI, and are distributed by Corrupt Media Outlets.”
