Europe’s Record Drought Is Pulling Ancient Secrets From the Danube

A summer of relentless heat has pushed water levels across Europe to historic lows and, in doing so, has handed archaeologists a rare window into the ancient world. From Bulgaria to Hungary, the shrinking Danube is exposing Roman-era ruins, artifacts, and inscriptions that have lain hidden beneath the surface for centuries.The most striking discovery to date comes from northern Bulgaria, where the foundations of the Constantine Bridge have emerged near the village of Gigen. Built under Emperor Constantine I and inaugurated in A.D. 328, the bridge once stretched more than a mile across the Danube, linking the ancient city of Ulpia Oescus with Sucidava in present-day Romania. Scholars regard it as one of the longest bridges ever built by the Roman Empire — a feat of ancient engineering, though a short-lived one. It is believed to have been largely destroyed around A.D. 367.This summer’s drought, worsened by a succession of record-breaking heatwaves, has caused severe water shortages across major waterways, including the Danube and the Rhine. While the consequences for water supply and transport are significant, the conditions have created an unexpected opportunity for researchers.“For archaeologists, these moments are extremely valuable because nature briefly reveals an object that is hidden beneath the Danube for most of the time,” an archaeologist with the Regional Historical Museum in Pleven, Pavel Popov, told Reuters. “It gives us a rare opportunity to observe, document, and study it in its real environment.”A team from the Pleven museum conducted aerial surveys near Gigen earlier this month, using drones to photograph and map the exposed bridge foundations, tracing their outline and assessing the condition of the ancient stonework.Downstream in Hungary, another significant find has emerged. Near Szalki Island outside Dunaújváros, archaeologists from the Intercisa Museum discovered a limestone altar dedicated to Jupiter — the chief god of the Roman pantheon — while surveying a newly accessible stretch of riverbed. The team, which included diving archaeologist Attila J. Tóth, had originally set out hoping to find traces of a medieval monastery. What they found instead was a piece of Roman frontier history.Days after the altar’s recovery, researchers pulled two additional fragments of inscribed limestone tablets from the same area. The finds are linked to the ancient settlement of Intercisa, which once centered on a Roman military fort along the Danube frontier in the province of Pannonia, part of the broader Roman Limes border defense network. Inscriptions on such altars and tablets can record the names of soldiers, military units, and dates, providing direct evidence of life on the empire’s edge.The survey was not without risk. Researchers also found what they believe to be an unexploded World War II munition on the riverbed, prompting an immediate call for military bomb disposal specialists. Museum officials have since warned the public against collecting artifacts from exposed areas, citing both the risk of archaeological damage and the danger of unexploded wartime ordnance.The Tiber River in Rome has also seen its water flow drop to half the national average for this time of year, exposing the remains of Nero’s Bridge — believed to have been constructed around 39 A.D. under Emperor Caligula — near the city center.Across Europe, the drought deepens. And with it, the ancient past keeps surfacing.
