Florida To Consider Banning Illegal Immigrants From Attending Public Colleges

Illegal immigrants may soon be blocked from attending public colleges in Florida, as the state’s education department is considering implementing a rule that would require applicants to show “clear and convincing documentation” that they are in the country legally. On May 14, Florida’s Department of Education will hold a vote on a proposed policy that would require each board of trustees in the Florida College System to “ensure that all students admitted to the Florida College System institution are citizens of the United States or lawfully present in the United States.”During the application process, applicants would be required to “provide clear and convincing documentation that he or she is a citizen of the United States or lawfully present in the United States prior to being granted admission to the institution.”The rule would apply to Florida’s 28 state colleges, but not its 12 state universities.The proposed rule comes after the legislature failed to advance legislation that would prevent all institutions of higher education from accepting illegal immigrants. Last year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he does not believe “you should be admitted to college in Florida if you’re here illegally.”Another rule set to be considered would require applicants for adult general education programs to prove their legal status. Programs that would be included under that rule include those “designed to improve the employability of the state’s workforce through adult basic education, adult secondary education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), applied academics for adult education instruction and instruction for adults with disabilities.”The policy coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee, Yareliz Mendez-Zamora, criticized the proposed rules, telling CBS Miami, “These are our kids, and they are our future.”“We are asking that the Florida Department of Education do the right thing and not pass these rules,” she said. Last year, Florida eliminated the ability for illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates if they went to a high school in the state for at least three years.Three other states, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, have laws that prevent illegal immigrants from attending public colleges.
