As the Lunar New Year approaches, the color red is splashed in even greater quantity than usual across the shops of Chinatown – red lanterns, red envelopes, red fake firecrackers. A bakery on Canal Street is drawing customers with a few different colors, though, such as green and yellow and white. Tai Pan Bakery is selling egg custard tarts, a longtime favorite of children choosing sweet dishes from dim sum carts, in three nontraditional flavors. Green for green tea, white for almond, and yellow for cheese. Also available are treats made with egg whites, others done in the Portuguese style, and mini ones about the size of an extra-large dollar coin. (Not all flavors are available every day.) The Year of the Dog begins on Sunday. New year, new flavor?
