If you’re planning on preparing an Easter feast this weekend, get yourself to the Bronx fast: Arthur Avenue, the main drag of New York’s second Little Italy, in the heart of the Belmont neighborhood, is already swelling with crowds of hungry shoppers. Even early yesterday morning, there was a line forming outside the famous Teitel Bros. pasta shop. For some Easter specialties, however, it might be worth battling the holiday crowds. Mike’s Deli, located in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, sells a traditional pizza rustica for Easter. The large pie, about 4 inches tall, is stuffed full with four cheeses, including ricotta and mozzarella, and three chopped meats, such as prosciutto di Parma and sopressata. The crust is flavored with lemon zest to cut the richness of the meats and cheeses. It’s best to serve slices of the pie at room temperature as an antipasto. The pies are almost guaranteed to sell out before the end of Good Friday, so hustle uptown before it’s too late.
Mike’s Deli, inside the Arthur Avenue Retail Market (2344 Arthur Ave., Bronx, 718-295-5033), sells a small 5-inch pizza rustica for $29, and a large 9-inch pie for $45.
