NEW DELHI — India’s top environmental official said the country will reject any proposals to limit greenhouse gas emissions at next week’s G–8 meeting because the move would hamper its rapid economic growth, a news report said.
“Legally mandated measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are likely to have significant adverse impacts on GDP growth of developing countries, including India,” Pradipto Ghosh was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying Monday.
India’s gross domestic product has grown by more than 8% annually in the past four years, fueled by an outsourcing and technology boom.
Mr. Ghosh, secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, said plans to cut back on greenhouse gases could also have “serious implications for our poverty-alleviation programs,” according to PTI. “This is not the path we want to pursue.”
