Iran freed on bail Ali Shakeri, the last of four American-Iranian dual nationals who were prevented from leaving the country after being accused of security violations. Mr. Shakeri was released yesterday and posted bail of $107,411, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said, citing an unidentified judiciary official. He is still banned from leaving Iran, the Iranian Students News Agency said.

The 59-year-old was arrested May 8 as he tried to depart from Iran after a visit, Human Rights Watch said in a September 22 statement. The American mortgage banker and founder of the Center for Citizen Peacebuilding, a California-based conflict-resolution group, spent more than four months in Tehran’s Evin prison. Mr. Shakeri’s release comes after two other American-Iranians were freed from jail in Iran. Academic Haleh Esfandiari and urban planner Kian Tajbakhsh were accused by Iran of supporting American plans to undermine the cleric-led regime.

Ms. Esfandiari left the country after she was freed on August 21, while Mr. Tajbakhsh is still in Iran after being released September 19. Journalist Parnaz Azima, a dual national whose passport had been confiscated though she wasn’t jailed, was allowed to leave Iran early this month.

The Bush administration is spending $75 million to fund Iranian activists and expand radio and television programming aimed at the Islamic Republic. Iran accuses America of sending agents or assigning individuals to work toward toppling the Islamic Republic.

The two nations are also in dispute over Iran’s nuclear- energy program, with the Islamic Republic denying American allegations that Iran is using the project to disguise the development of a bomb.

Mr. Shakeri’s release coincides with President Ahmadinejad trip to America and his scheduled address to the U.N. General Assembly yesterday.
