Pro-Palestinian Watermelon Mural in Black Neighborhood Angers Virginia Civil Rights Activists

Images of watermelons have been used by pro-Palestinians to symbolize their cause, but have also been used as a racist stereotype to demean blacks. Those clashing interpretations are contributing to a debate over a mural in a historically black neighborhood at Richmond, Virginia.The mural covers the entire side of a building featuring a dark-skinned woman holding a slice of watermelon. The seeds in the watermelon spell out “Free Palestine.”The artist, who goes by Lauren YS, says the link to racist caricatures was unintentional and the watermelon has long been a symbol associated with the cause of Palestinian freedom.“I as an activist would never intentionally put my time, money and energy into creating something racist or harmful to any community, rather the opposite,” Lauren YS said in an email to Richmonder.The artist says the character is meant to be Palestinian and any similarities to “harmful imagery” are completely unintentional.There are growing calls, however, to alter the mural, despite it now being up for about three months.“The image as it stands could be modified and would help the cause for both African-American freedom and justice and for the Palestinian cause,” Southern Christian Leadership Conference local chapter president William McGee told local news station WWBT-TV.The former president of the Richmond Crusade for Voters, Jonathan Davis, says the mural really bothered him. “I was taken aback because of the imagery that it represents, a watermelon up to the mouth of a black woman,” Mr. Davis told the station.A longtime black activist in the city, Gary Flowers, said black leaders are familiar with the Palestinian movement but says the watermelon image is “offensive” to people who lived through the Jim Crow era and the building owner and muralist failed the neighborhood.“They did not meet with the community before they put the artwork up,” Mr. Flowers told the TV station. “Secondly, they placed it in the epicenter of downtown Northside, if you will, of Richmond, Virginia. This community, very black and proud over the last 80 years.”Mr. Flowers also claims the building owner was dismissive when he approached them to discuss his concerns. The owner, Teresa Sharpe, disputed that, saying she contacted community members before giving the okay for the mural.Not all residents have a problem with the mural. “I feel like there’s a litany of issues in Northside that are of more pressing importance than the issues that these folks are taking with the mural,” community activist Duron Chavis said.“It’s obviously and very clearly, distinctly, speaking to the Palestinian genocide and lifting up the narrative of the importance of their resistance movement to survive,” Mr. Chavis added.Ms. Sharpe is considering holding a town hall to get the community’s input about the mural’s future.
