Glimpsing Glory in the Fog of War

Through the fog of war President Trump is emerging as an impassioned leader who has surrounded himself with a coherent and winning team of whose prowess millions of Americans are proud. As the wisps of this metaphorical fog obscured some of the details, the rest of us began to get, from today’s press conference, a glimpse of the danger, complexity, and courage that converged in Iran’s mountains to find and bring home a hero known as Dude 44 Bravo.He was the “backseater” in the F15 from which he and the pilot, Dude 44 Alpha ejected as their aircraft sped over the mountains under the Iranian sky. As Mr. Trump spoke it struck us almost as if the president was unspooling a new genre of briefing, tested since his first term, of conveying the drama of war-fighting that most of us can but imagine. He used it in 2019 after the raid that found a leader of ISIS.It reminds us of the moment people began to realize Mr. Trump’s political rallies were something new. We see the war briefing develop in his dissection of the mission that captured the President of Venezuela from the heart of his fortress. And now the flight to rescue a courageous colonel. Within seconds of his ejection, Dude 44 Bravo had hurtled miles from his pilot, who’d also ejected and who was rescued relatively quickly.The backseater then became the object of a vast search, eventually making his way, though badly wounded and bleeding, up a 7,000 foot ridge. He hid in a crevice. Through the darkness his rescuers were watching the ridge, via high-tech tools, from 40 miles away. Suddenly they spotted what looked like a human head and then a man moving. That’s when they knew they’d found him, and the race began to get to him before the enemy did.There are those who are uncomfortable with the boastfulness and bluntness of these press conferences. Yet we’ve no doubt that there are millions of Americans who thrill to the kind of glory of which Mr. Trump and his team sought to share with their countrymen. The epic will be made into books and movies. People will thrill at them too, and bow their heads to what Dude 44 Bravo said when he first sent a message that he was alive: “God is good.”
