Harry and Meghan Win Rapturous Welcome in Britain, but No Forgiveness Forthcoming From Royals

The apparent success on Thursday of the first joint appearance by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle since they returned to Britain in August could augur a new era for the Sussexes — and further clashes with the House of Windsor. The Sussexes undertook a series of appearances for charities at Nottingham, a Midlands city some two and half hours by car from London. Nottingham was the first city that the couple visited in 2017, after their engagement. A few years later, they resigned as working royals and decamped for Montecito, California, to pursue lucrative deals with Spotify and Netflix. On Thursday Prince Harry declared, “It’s great to be back. Wonderful and great to be back in Nottingham, too.” Last month the prince averred that it was “good to be back on British soil.” The decision by the Sussexes to move back to Britain came as something of a shock. The duchess echoed her husband’s sentiment to a crowd of around 100, exclaiming, “It’s great to be back.” Meghan was handed two large bouquets, and a shout of “I love you, Duchess Meghan” was heard as she stepped into a car.The Duchess of Sussex was more voluble during a stop at a community kitchen. “I feel most like myself when I’m with my family and also when I’m cooking. I love doing that. I love to cook,” she said. Ms. Markle hosted a cooking and lifestyle show on Netflix titled, “With Love, Meghan,” which ran for two seasons. Guests included actress and producer Mindy Kaling and celebrity chef David Chang, among other luminaries. Netflix described the show as one where the duchess “shares personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection and highlights how easy it can be to create beauty, even in the unexpected. She and her guests roll up their sleeves in the kitchen, the garden and beyond, and invite you to do the same.” Critics and viewers, though, largely declined that invitation, resulting in the show’s cancellation. Variety called the show “a Montecito ego trip not worth taking” and added that it “is made with a great deal of love — in the sense that the greatest love of all is the one that a person has for herself.” A YouGov poll puts Ms. Markle’s popularity in Britain at 22 percent. Her husband is at 29 percent. The most beloved royal is King Charles’s younger sister, Princess Anne, at 67 percent. She has made some 20,000 charitable appearances. The warm reception at Nottingham, though, could suggest that opinion toward the Sussexes may warm over time as they settle back in the realm ruled by Prince Harry’s father, Charles III. Buckingham Palace, though, greeted the Sussexes’ return with a letter from the Lord Chamberlain reiterating that, per the terms of the Sandringham Agreement handed down by Queen Elizabeth II, the couple are “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” Prince Harry colored himself “surprised” by the note.Appearances like the ones the Sussexes undertook on Thursday, though, have many of the trappings, if not the signet, of royal engagements. One royal watcher, Kinsey Schofield, said the dynamic resembles “royal theater without royal authority.” She reckons that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “can imitate the engagement, but they can’t replicate the authority or constitutional significance.” On Thursday, the Sussexes were protected by private security, not the state apparatus afforded to senior members of the royal family. That arrangement could soon change. The Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as RAVEC, is weighing whether to restore the comprehensive security that the Sussexes forfeited when they elected to leave Britain and abjured the responsibilities into which Prince Harry was born. The prince has unsuccessfully sued for such a restoration, repeatedly insisting that he and his family are in danger. The British Home Office’s denial of Prince Harry’s appeal, though, was handed down before the so-called “Reverse Megxit’ that occurred this summer. The Sussexes’ children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have had to switch schools on account of security concerns and have also faced surveillance by photographers that Prince Harry calls “European paparazzi.” The duke and duchess have not seen Prince William or King Charles and Queen Camilla since they moved back. Prince Harry has not spoken to his brother in four years. On Thursday, the king presided over the Ceremonial Opening of the Senedd, or Parliament, at Wales. He began his speech in Welsh, “Pob bendith ar eich gwaith er lles y wlad arbennig hon.” That translates to “Heartfelt thanks for your work for the welfare and success of this special land.”
