Harvard Moves To Recruit Faculty With ‘Viewpoint Diversity’: Report

Harvard University, facing scrutiny from the federal government over its anti-conservative bias, is looking to raise several hundred million dollars to recruit a new cohort of professors with greater “viewpoint diversity,” according to a new report.Sources told the Harvard Crimson that university leaders have been quietly soliciting $10 million gifts from donors to establish new endowed professorships with broader ideological representation. The initiative, if successful, could bring “dozens of faculty members to campus” and “drastically shift Harvard’s academic makeup,” the Crimson reports.The effort is reportedly spearheaded by Harvard Provost John Manning, who began testing the idea as early as last summer. At an alumni gathering in Boston, Mr. Manning told attendees he hoped to recruit between 20 and 30 new faculty members for the project, sources told the Crimson.The university has not confirmed the undertaking, but said in a statement that Mr. Manning and Harvard’s president, Alan Garber, were in “ongoing conversations with a variety of members of the University community about how best to advance” ideological diversity on campus, and that “potential approaches continue to evolve through these discussions.”A fellow at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, Steve McGuire, called the project a potentially “serious and positive step toward reforming the university.”Representative Elise Stefanik, a Harvard alumna who has led the charge against antisemitism on college campuses, was less sanguine. “This shows me just how bad their fundraising must be after the infamous hearing heard around the world,” she wrote on X, referencing former president Claudine Gay’s refusal to give a definitive answer when asked at a congressional hearing whether calls for the genocide of Jews would violate the school’s conduct rules.The reports come just days after Mr. Garber said at a Manhattan event that he was “disappointed” by the ignorance he has observed among Harvard students who hold strong opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. More troubling still, Mr. Garber added, is some students’ unwillingness to deepen their understanding through legitimate discussion. “If you’re going to have strong views about an issue,” he said, “I would hope that at a University you would have the curiosity to learn the facts.”In January, Mr. Garber acknowledged that Harvard “went wrong” in allowing professors to push their political views in the classroom, a practice he said likely discouraged open discourse.The university has long faced criticism for its ideological skew. A 2025 Crimson poll found that just 9 percent of Harvard faculty respondents identified as conservative, against 63 percent who identified as liberal.
