The annual Exposition of Sculptural Objects and Functional Art, known as SOFA, breaks down the divide that most people perceive between furniture and art. Here, buyers for the home can find items that exist in both categories: furniture by George Nakashima, a mid-century artist and designer; ceramic vases by Japanese sculptor Sakiyama Takayuki, whose work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection, shimmering gold and silver-leafed wall hangings by Colombian textile artist Olga de Amaral, and sculptures by Norma Minkowitz, who uses crocheting techniques to make her sculpted forms.
Now in its 13th year, SOFA opens today at the Seventh Regiment Armory at Park Avenue and 67th Street, and runs through Sunday. Admission is $16, or $28 for a four-day pass, and includes the catalog. Lectures and presentations by artists, curators, and collectors will be held at the show as well. For more information, visit www.sofaexpo.com or call 800-563-SOFA.
