Fans of the streamlined, minimalist designs of MUJI can rejoice: They no longer need to travel to London, Paris, or Japan to find their favorite products. On Tuesday, New York’s first MUJI store will open on the lower level of the MoMA Design Store’s SoHo shop.
MUJI has enjoyed a cult-like following among design aficionados since opening its first store in Japan in 1983.MUJI is an abbreviation of the company’s name in Japanese, Mujirushi Ryohin, meaning no-brand goods, and its products, made with inexpensive, environmentally friendly materials, live up to the name: from transparent file-folders to aluminum glasses cases, they have a no-frills, unadorned aesthetic.
The new 500-square-foot MUJI at MoMA store will feature more than 200 MUJI products, including items for desktop, travel, organization, furniture, and personal accessories.
