How The Beatles’ ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ Appearance Gave America a New Soundtrack

When Paul McCartney’s “The Boys of Dungeon Lane” entered Billboard’s Top Ten last month, it extended one of the most remarkable chart careers in popular music. Including his work with The Beatles, it became the 54th album bearing his name to reach America’s leading album chart.More than six decades after Beatlemania first swept the United States, Mr. McCartney remains a chart force. His success is a reminder that one extraordinary week in February 1964 did more than launch the biggest British band in history. It changed American popular culture forever.The Beatles didn’t simply revive rock ‘n’ roll. They gave it a new identity. Their sharp suits, distinctive haircuts, irreverent humour, and irresistible songs transformed four young men from Liverpool into the faces of a new generation. In the process, they ignited what became known as the British Invasion.That revolution began on February 7, 1964, when The Beatles landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to make their first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”By then, an almost mythical aura surrounded them. Record producer Phil Spector, a nervous flyer, reportedly switched flights so he could travel with the band. He later admitted he believed that no aircraft carrying The Beatles could possibly crash.Within 48 hours, they attracted the largest television audience in American history. Seventy-three million viewers tuned in to watch four young musicians from Liverpool perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Legend has it that crime in New York dipped that evening because even criminals stayed home to watch.How did a band whose records had been rejected by American companies only months earlier conquer the world’s biggest music market with a single television appearance? The answer was equal parts meticulous planning, perfect timing and remarkable good fortune.The morning after The Beatles’ Royal Command Performance on November 4, 1963, their manager, Brian Epstein, boarded a flight to New York. While Britain celebrated Beatlemania, Epstein was determined to make America surrender to it.It would not be easy. Capitol Records, EMI’s American subsidiary, had refused to release the band’s first two singles, “Love Me Do” and “Please Please Me.” Other major labels were equally unconvinced. EMI eventually placed “Please Please Me” and “From Me to You” with the independent Chicago label Vee-Jay, while “She Loves You” ended up on Philadelphia’s Swan Records.Epstein knew that piecemeal releases would never be enough. America’s most influential television host, Ed Sullivan, had recently witnessed the hysteria surrounding The Beatles during a visit to Britain and wanted to know what all the excitement was about. When Epstein met Sullivan and his producer, Bob Precht, in New York that November, Precht initially dismissed The Beatles as little more than a novelty act. Epstein fiercely defended his artists.He left the meeting with something infinitely more valuable than a record deal.The Beatles would headline not one, but three consecutive editions of “The Ed Sullivan Show” on February 9, 16 and 23, 1964.The Sullivan agreement transformed Capitol Records’ attitude overnight. Faced with the prospect of The Beatles appearing on America’s biggest television show, the company finally agreed to release “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in January 1964 and committed an unprecedented $50,000 to promoting the record.Epstein returned to London believing he had laid the foundations. Events soon proved him right. As Beatlemania intensified in Britain, American television crews crossed the Atlantic to discover what all the fuss was about. Three networks filmed the band during their November 16 concert at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth.One of those reports changed music history. In Silver Spring, Maryland, 15-year-old Marsha Albert watched the broadcast and was captivated. She wrote to local disc jockey Carroll James, asking why American radio wasn’t playing The Beatles.Curious, James found an imported copy of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and invited Marsha into the studio to introduce it herself. The response was immediate. Phone lines lit up as listeners demanded to hear the song again. James played it the following night. The reaction was just as overwhelming. Soon, other stations were doing the same.Capitol had no choice but to accelerate its plans. The single’s release was brought forward to late December as radio stations across the country embraced the record. By New Year’s Day it had sold more than a million copies.America was now ready. Across New York, posters and stickers proclaimed, “The Beatles Are Coming,” a playful echo of the Revolutionary War warning, “The British are coming.”Radio fuelled the anticipation. On February 7, as Pan Am Flight 101 crossed the Atlantic, New York powerhouse WMCA tracked the band’s journey almost minute by minute: “It’s 10:30 Beatle Time, and the mop tops are just 100 miles from landing…”By the time the aircraft touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport, more than 4,000 fans had gathered to welcome four young men who, apart from George Harrison, had never before set foot in America.The frenzy was unprecedented. Their first stop was an impromptu press conference inside the airport terminal. American reporters had a reputation for scepticism and sharp elbows. Within minutes, The Beatles had them laughing.“What do you think of Beethoven?” one reporter asked. “We like him,” Ringo Starr replied. “Especially his poems.” The room erupted. It was the perfect introduction. After years of polished, predictable entertainers delivering rehearsed answers, The Beatles were funny, irreverent and completely unguarded. Their wit was as disarming as their music.From the airport they travelled to the Plaza Hotel, where hundreds of fans had been waiting for hours. Many would remain there throughout the band’s stay, hoping for little more than a glimpse from a window.The next day disappeared into an endless procession of interviews. The same questions. The same jokes. The same infectious charm. The real reason they had crossed the Atlantic, however, still lay ahead. On Sunday night, February 9, America would finally hear them play. For the first time since landing in New York, The Beatles could stop answering questions and do what they did better than anyone else — perform.They arrived at CBS Television City, home of “The Ed Sullivan Show,” during the afternoon. Demand for tickets had been unprecedented. More than 50,000 requests poured in for just 728 seats. Waiting in the dressing room was another measure of Beatlemania: piles of letters, telegrams and gifts from well-wishers.One envelope, marked “URGENT” in red ink, immediately caught Paul McCartney’s attention. “It’s from Elvis,” he announced excitedly. “Who’s Elvis?” John Lennon deadpanned. The joke summed up The Beatles’ confidence. They admired Elvis Presley more than any other rock ‘n’ roll star, yet they had arrived in America with the swagger of men convinced they belonged on the same stage.The group rehearsed twice that day. During the afternoon recording for the following week’s broadcast, they opened with the Isley Brothers’ “Twist and Shout,” a fitting salute to the American rhythm and blues that had inspired them as teenagers. It didn’t matter. The excitement of the moment overwhelmed everything else.Paul McCartney stared directly into the cameras with boyish confidence. Lennon balanced mischief with cool detachment. George Harrison remained quietly elegant, while Ringo Starr’s infectious grin made him instantly irresistible. The deafening screams that greeted The Beatles at every concert became one of the defining sounds of the 1960s. To many adults they were little more than hysteria. In reality, they expressed a new sense of freedom. Young women were no longer expected to sit politely and admire. They shouted, laughed, cried, and celebrated, without apology.Chris Makris, who was ten years old and living in Concord, New Hampshire, remembers those screams differently. “In a way,” he recalled, “they expressed the excitement we all felt about The Beatles. Those girls added a lot to Beatle status.” Within months, the British Invasion was in full flight. The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits and dozens of other British acts followed the path The Beatles had opened.American music, fashion, television and popular culture would never be quite the same again. Yet the greatest achievement of that remarkable week cannot be measured by television ratings or record sales.When The Beatles landed at John F. Kennedy Airport on February 7, 1964, they arrived as four hugely successful young musicians from Liverpool. Seven days later, they had redefined what a rock band could look like, how it could behave and what it could mean to an entire generation.
