Iran Reportedly Attacks Cargo Ship Passing Through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a drone strike on a Singapore-flagged vessel as it was trying to use a new temporary route promoted by the United Nations to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report. The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations, UKMTO, said that the attack, which occurred off the coast of Yemen, left no casualties. “Authorities are investigating. Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the UKMTO said in a statement. Unnamed American officials told the Wall Street Journal that the Revolutionary Guard was behind the attack.The strike comes days after President Trump and Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, signed a “memorandum of understanding,” a 60-day deal designed to bring an end to the fighting and open the Strait of Hormuz as both sides engage in further talks with the goal of a permanent end to the conflict. A condition of the memorandum of understanding is that Iran “make arrangements using its best efforts” to allow the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, without charging tolls.American officials had approved a route that is closer to the Omani coastline, while Iran insists that ships will have to take a route closer to Iran’s coast. The agency set up by Iran to manage traffic in the strait, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, said on Thursday, “Any passage through routes outside the framework designated by PGSA will not be covered by safe passage guarantees and will not be entitled to insurance coverage or related liabilities.”“The consequences arising from passage through unauthorized routes shall be the responsibility of the owner, operator, and vessel commander,” it added. The strike poses a test for the memorandum of understanding. Mr. Trump told reporters last week that if Iran does not “behave,” America will “go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head.”
