Israel Says It Destroyed Complex Full of Clerics Tasked With Selecting Iran’s Next Supreme Leader

The Israel Defense Forces say they hit the building of a clerical group in charge of electing Iran’s new supreme leader.The IDF says it hit the Iranian Regime’s leadership compound overnight. The targets included the Supreme National Security Council building, the presidential complex, and the assembly area of the Council of Experts at the holy city of Qom south of Tehran.Video shared on social media showed severe damage to the upper levels of the Council of Experts building. “The leaders behind this terror regime, and the headquarters in which they sat, have been eliminated,” the IDF said in an X post.Israeli journalist Amit Segal reported on X that Israel attacked the assembly while it was counting the ballots to choose a replacement for Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an air strike on Saturday. That information could not be independently verified.Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency disputed that the council was meeting in the building. It reported that the structure was old and not regularly used for meetings, according to Bloomberg.A Farsi language X account believed to be associated with Mossad released a statement on Tuesday stating, “It doesn’t matter who is chosen today; his fate has been decreed. Only the Iranian nation will choose their future leader.”Tehran is under heavy bombardment on the fourth day of Israeli and American attacks. Iran is also continuing attacks across the region, including against Israel.America’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, warned Americans in Israel that there are “very limited” options for anyone wishing to get out of the country. He said the American embassy was not in a position to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.“As of now, the best is utilizing Israel’s Ministry of Tourism shuttle bus to Taba, Egypt and getting flights from there or going on to Cairo for flights back to the US,” Mr. Huckabee said in an X post.Oil prices continued to surge on Tuesday because of a lack of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. An Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander claimed on Monday the route used to transport 20 percent of the world’s oil supply was closed. While that closure is not confirmed, many tankers are currently avoiding the strait due to the danger.Iraq’s Ministry of Oil said on Tuesday that it is lowering oil production levels because of a lack of tankers entering the Persian Gulf through the strait. The ministry said it was running out of storage for the oil it already has on hand.
