Israeli Leaders Condemn IDF Soldier Photographed Smashing Jesus Statue in Lebanon

An image showing an Israel Defense Forces soldier destroying a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has ignited widespread outrage across social media and drawn a pledge of “harsh disciplinary action” against the offender from the prime minister.Following the widespread circulation of the photograph on Sunday afternoon, the IDF launched a swift review and officially confirmed on Sunday evening that the unsettling image is, in fact, genuine.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to address the incident, placing his response high on the national agenda amid a 4-day-old ceasefire in the war with Lebanon. In a statement posted on X on Monday, the prime minister expressed his profound dismay over the soldier’s actions. “I am stunned and saddened,” Mr. Netanyahu wrote upon learning of the desecration. “I condemn the act in the strongest terms. Military authorities are conducting a criminal probe of the matter and will take appropriately harsh disciplinary action against the offender.”The incident allegedly took place in Debel, a Maronite Christian village in the central sector of southern Lebanon. The village lies about 4 miles northwest of Ain Ebel and approximately 3 miles northeast of the Israeli border community of Shtula. The photograph was initially brought to public attention on Sunday morning when it was posted online by a Palestinian journalist named Younis Tirawi.An IDF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, responded to the initial wave of global criticism, speaking before the military had confirmed the photo’s authenticity.“The IDF is currently examining the reliability of the photograph,” he said as the image began to go viral. “If this is indeed a real, recent picture, these actions do not align with the IDF’s values and the behavior expected of IDF soldiers. The incident will be investigated thoroughly and in depth, and if necessary, steps will be taken in accordance with the findings.”By Sunday evening, that investigation had yielded a definitive confirmation. “The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasizes that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops,” the military wrote on X. The IDF added that the situation was being aggressively investigated by the Northern Command and was being handled strictly “through the chain of command.”“Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings,” the military said. In an effort to make amends for the destruction of the religious icon, the Northern Command also pledged to assist the local Christian community in restoring the damaged statue to its rightful place.Condemnations have continued to pour in from top Israeli officials. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar voiced his absolute rejection of the soldier’s actions, labeling the incident as “grave and disgraceful” in a Monday morning post on X.“This shameful action is completely contrary to our values,” Mr. Sa’ar wrote. He extended a formal apology to Christians who felt hurt by the desecration, adding his confidence that the IDF will take the “necessary strict measures” against the responsible soldier.Religious leaders also spoke out against the vandalism. The president and head of Ohr Torah Stone, Rabbi Dr. Kenneth Brander, described the image as “deeply troubling and painful.” Ohr Torah Stone is a prominent network of more than 30 Orthodox educational institutions.“Such acts of desecration contradict the values of the IDF and the teachings of Judaism, which demand respect for all people and all expressions of faith,” Mr. Brander told the Jerusalem Post. “The IDF’s decision to investigate, assist the local community, and restore the damaged statue is both important and commendable, reflecting a commitment to accountability even when individuals fall short. It is a reminder that true strength is measured not only on the battlefield, but also in the ability to confront wrongdoing, uphold Torah values, and act with integrity in the most complex circumstances,” he said.
