Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations Following Failed Bailout and Surging Fuel Costs

Spirit Airlines shut down Saturday after failing to secure creditor support for a last-minute bailout plan backed by the Trump administration, ending operations for one of the largest U.S. budget carriers.The airline canceled all flights effective immediately and told customers not to go to the airport. In a message shown in Spirit’s app, the company said, “We regret to inform you that all Spirit Airlines flights have been canceled, effective immediately.”The shutdown follows Spirit’s second bankruptcy filing since November 2024 and caps a long decline driven by mounting costs, intense competition, changing traveler preferences, and a failed merger. More recently, a sharp rise in jet fuel prices appears to have pushed the airline past the point of recovery.“Unfortunately, despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook,” the airline said in a statement announcing “an orderly wind-down of operations.” The airline said 17,000 direct and indirect employees have lost their jobs. For many travelers, Spirit had long been both a punchline and an essential option: a carrier known for bright yellow planes, bare-bones service, and a fee for nearly everything, but also for offering some of the lowest fares in the country. Its shutdown marks the end of a major chapter in U.S. discount air travel.The airline had expected to emerge from bankruptcy protection by midyear, but its financial position worsened as fuel prices surged. According to the company, the rise in costs left it unable to continue without a major cash injection.Spirit had built its brand around ultra-low fares and no-frills travel, helping make air travel more affordable for millions of passengers. At one point, it accounted for about 5 percent of U.S. flights and played a major role in keeping fares down in markets where it competed with larger carriers. But after the pandemic, demand shifted as more travelers opted for comfort and premium experiences, leaving ultra-low-cost airlines under pressure.A bankruptcy court had already been warned that Spirit was running out of time. On April 23, the airline’s lawyer, Marshall Huebner, told the court in New York that Spirit’s cash “is not going to last for very much longer.”Talks over a government-backed rescue continued into Friday but ended without a deal. The Trump administration had offered a $500 million loan package that could have given the government warrants equivalent to as much as 90 percent of Spirit’s equity. But negotiations with bondholders broke down.President Trump said Friday that his administration had made a final proposal. “I would say we’re driving a tough deal, but it’s one of those things we will do it, or we won’t,” Mr. Trump told reporters on Friday. “Seems like the other lenders are blocking. They think they’ll get bumped down in priority. We come first,” he said.The proposed bailout faced resistance from some Republicans and from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who questioned whether additional support would change the airline’s long-term outlook. “What we don’t want to do is put good money after bad, and there’s been a lot of money thrown at Spirit, and they haven’t found their way into profitability,” Mr. Duffy said in an interview with Reuters.Before shutting down, Spirit had scheduled 4,119 domestic flights between May 1 and May 15, offering more than 809,000 seats, Cirium data showed. Its final completed flight was NK1833 from Detroit to Dallas Fort Worth, which landed shortly after midnight local time, according to the company and Flightradar24 data. Spirit said it flew more than 50,000 people over the past day.The airline said customers who bought tickets directly through Spirit using a credit card or debit card will receive automatic refunds. It also said vendors with outstanding claims would have to proceed through the bankruptcy process.“We are committed to working with our vendors through the wind-down process and will be in touch in the coming days to discuss next steps. Any outstanding claims will need to be addressed through the bankruptcy process,” Spirit said.Other airlines quickly moved to attract stranded Spirit passengers and displaced crews. Southwest said it would offer discounted fares on overlapping routes, pricing flights up to 500 miles at $200, up to 1,000 miles at $300, and longer flights at $400. United said it would cap fares for Spirit customers at $299, with most fares priced at $199. American, JetBlue, and Frontier also announced rescue-fare options.JetBlue also said it would expand service from Fort Lauderdale, one of Spirit’s key markets, adding 11 new cities and more frequencies on existing routes.Spirit’s collapse is likely to affect fares in some markets where it had been a low-cost competitor, though the airline had already reduced service significantly in recent months. Analysts expect other carriers to step in and add flights on some of its former routes.Jet fuel prices have more than doubled during the conflict in Iran, creating a major supply shock for the airline industry. Disruptions to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have sidelined three of the world’s top jet fuel exporters — China, South Korea, and Kuwait. China has halted exports, South Korea has reduced production due to crude shortages, and Kuwait cannot ship refined fuel.According to the International Air Transport Association Jet Fuel Price Index, global jet fuel prices rose from about $100 a barrel late last year to more than $200 last month, a 105.1-percent increase year over year. North America has seen the smallest regional rise, but prices are still up 82.6 percent.Airlines are responding by cutting flights and raising fares. United Airlines plans to increase ticket prices by up to 20 percent this summer and reduce capacity after recovering much of its higher fuel costs through strong demand. In Europe, Lufthansa is cutting 20,000 flights by October, suspending unprofitable short-haul routes and rerouting others through major hubs to save fuel.Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, warned Europe has “maybe six weeks or so [of] jet fuel left.”
