Japan Tests Hypersonic Jet Capable of Flying From New York to Tokyo in Less Than Two Hours

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has successfully conducted a groundbreaking engine test for a new hypersonic passenger aircraft that could revolutionize global travel.Capable of reaching speeds of Mach 5 — roughly 3,836 mph — the futuristic aircraft could theoretically complete a grueling 6,730-mile flight from New York to Tokyo in an hour and forty-five minutes. Humans can comfortably survive this speed inside pressurized aircraft and spacecraft; for instance, Apollo astronauts hit speeds around Mach 32 (24,500 mph) when returning from the Moon.But operating at such extreme speeds generates massive friction, with temperatures around the airframe topping 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Such thermal punishment can destroy conventional aircraft structures within minutes. However, during the recent simulated flight test, the vehicle’s shielding proved highly resilient. According to the Japanese team, the thermal protection system managed to keep the inside of the aircraft near normal operating temperatures despite the severe external heat, a critical engineering victory as modern aircraft rely heavily on sensitive onboard electronics for flight control and stability management.The historic experiment took place inside a specialized ramjet engine testing facility at JAXA’s Kakuda Space Center in Miyagi Prefecture. Engineers successfully recreated a simulated Mach 5 flight environment around a compact experimental aircraft to evaluate the whole system.They tested the hydrogen-fueled ramjet combustion, aerodynamic control surfaces, and exhaust-temperature distribution. Unlike conventional jet engines that utilize rotating compressor blades, a ramjet relies on the aircraft’s immense forward speed to compress incoming air before combustion, making it simpler and more efficient at extreme velocities.Interestingly, the Japanese researchers were also studying the environmental impact of the hydrogen ramjet exhaust, gathering vital data to determine if this type of high-speed propulsion could eventually become sustainable for broader commercial aerospace use.The Mach 5 capability places Japan’s ambitious project in an entirely different category from historical and contemporary high-speed aviation efforts. For comparison, the legendary Concorde, which retired in 2003, maxed out at Mach 2 (1,534 mph) and could fly from New York City to London in just under two hours. Another aerospace company, Boom, has a supersonic project named “Overture,” which is targeting Mach 1.7 as a top speed. Despite the success of the simulation, commercial hypersonic flights could still be a long time off. Professor Hideki Taguchi of Tokyo University of Science told Israel Hayom that developing a conventional passenger plane takes about 10 years, while this project involves a two-stage process that includes both an experimental vehicle and a future passenger aircraft. As a result, the estimate is that the project will be completed in about 20 years.The latest test was only another small step toward a real flight demonstration. The next major phase of Japan’s program may involve using a launch rocket to carry out a real-world flight demonstration at Mach 5, cruising at altitudes of about 90,000 feet — more than twice the altitude of regular airliners.
