Katie Zacharia Appears Unsure Whether She Has the Confidence of President Trump

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has launched a damage control tour after her first week as White House press secretary.Ms. Zacharia has herself become the story after a shaky debut at the press podium on Tuesday and questions over why she calls herself a lawyer when she has not passed the bar exam. While Ms. Zacharia failed her one and only try at the California bar exam, Mr. Trump described her as an “attorney” in a post on Truth Social announcing her appointment. On Fox News Friday morning, host Lawrence B. Jones asked Ms. Zacharia the question that matters most inside the White House: Do you have the confidence of the President?“I’m standing here,” she said during the interview from the White House grounds. “I was able to travel with him, through all the midterm convention, sorry, the midterm rallies, and I hope to be able to build the trust and confidence of everyone around me.”“Lying to the President of the United States about your resume to land a job is a big deal,” former Fox News host Katie Pavlich said on X. “The President incorrectly and repeatedly stated she was an attorney because for years she said so. I’d hope more people would be upset about that. The issue is the dishonesty.”On Thursday night, the frozen smile of Ms. Zacharia abruptly faded seconds into her interview with Fox host Sean Hannity when told her that her first press conference had been “widely panned.” He also asked about her parsing that she was a lawyer, not an attorney.“Why did you never just say, ‘I never practiced law?’” Mr. Hannity asked.“Sean, when I moved back from the United States I did not retake the bar, I had four kids in six years, it was never my intent to go into the practice of law,” she said. “When I went to go engage in media and legal analysis, I consulted attorneys and legal professionals as to whether or not I could be labeled a lawyer, both because I had a valid Juris Doctor from a good law school, a reputable law school, Pepperdine Law School and in conjunction with the fact that I did have actual substantive legal experience.”Ms. Zacharia said her failed bar exam was “inconsequential” because at the time she took the exam, she was leaving the country to live in China with her husband. She did not attempt to take the bar again. In China, Ms. Zacharia worked for the Zhong Lun law firm and said she did not give legal advice, instead working on “cross country border transactions and multi-million dollar shareholder agreements.”As for her first press conference Tuesday, Ms. Zacharia told Mr. Hannity she “stepped up to the plate,” “with very little prep time and I received briefing materials in the morning of Tuesday.”“Am I hearing that you think the staff should have prepped you better?” Mr. Hannity asked.“Well I believed that in that time I could have just given a brief intro, and said ‘I’m only here to introduce myself and I want to engage with the press corps, I’m someone who wants to build relationships, with every single one of you,’” Ms. Zacharia said.I feel like I did my very best.”When asked Friday when the next White House press briefing would be, Ms. Zacharia said she was “working in close coordination with the Communications department of the President to determine when the best next time for a press briefing is.”
