Man Wielding a Pizza Cutter, BBQ Fork Charged After Allegedly Trying To Break Luigi Mangione Out of Jail

A Minnesota man is accused of impersonating an FBI agent in an apparent effort to break Luigi Mangione out of a federal jail in New York, authorities say.The incident took place Wednesday evening at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. A criminal complaint states that Mark Anderson showed up at the jail just before 7 p.m. claiming he had paperwork “signed by a judge” authorizing the release of an inmate at the jail.The complaint does not name the inmate, but multiple news outlets identified the inmate as Mr. Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare chief executive officer Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street.After jail officials asked Mr. Anderson to identify himself, he produced a Minnesota driver’s license and claimed he had weapons, according to the complaint. The weapons were later found in a backpack Mr. Anderson was carrying, and included a large BBQ fork and a round steel blade that appeared to be a pizza cutter.Items confiscated from the suspect. The criminal complaint filed by an FBI agent states that those papers “appear to be related to filing claims against the United States Department of Justice.”Mr. Anderson was due to appear before a federal magistrate judge on Thursday afternoon on charges of impersonating a federal agent.Mr. Mangione is being held without bail on murder charges and federal prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty in the case. He is due back in court on Friday.Mr. Mangione has become somewhat of a folk hero despite gunning down the father of two in 2024. Supporters have cheered him as a vigilante trying to get back at health insurers they claim put profits over patients.A website called Stats4Lulu tracks the thousands of letters Mr. Mangione has received behind bars. It also has a running total of donations to Mr. Mangione’s defense fund. As of this week, more than 38,000 individuals have given $1.4 million dollars. The median donation is $15, according to the website.Mr. Mangione, 27, is also being prosecuted by two states in connection with the murder of Thompson. New York prosecutors are asking for their trial to take place first and have asked a judge to set a trial for July. Charges against Mr. Mangione are also pending in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested at a McDonald’s five days after the killing.
