More Trouble for Trump’s Freedom 250 as Massachusetts Police Cancel Freedom Truck Appearance Over Its Conservative Ties

Another part of the Freedom 250’s planned celebration to mark America’s semiquincentennial anniversary is facing controversy as a local police station in Massachusetts has canceled a scheduled appearance of a Freedom Truck due to its connections to conservative organizations. Freedom 250, the organization set up by an executive order issued by President Trump to plan a “grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence.” Some of the planned festivities have been ridiculed. The future of a concert series that is scheduled to take during the Great American State Fair at Washington has been called into question after several artists have backed out of the event, claiming they were misled. Beyond events in America’s capital, the Freedom 250 organizers have also set up 18-wheeler “museum[s] on wheels” to travel around the country. The trucks have interactive exhibits, such as a kiosk where guests can sign the Declaration of Independence. The mobile museums, which were set up in partnership with a conservative educational and advocacy organization, PragerU, and Hillsdale College, have been criticized by left-wing commentators who say they are not providing an accurate depiction of American history. On Monday, the Westfield Police Department said that it canceled a scheduled Freedom Truck appearance due to its connection to PragerU. “Following the announcement of the Freedom 250 Mobile Museum event on social media last week, it was brought to our attention that while the program receives partial funding and support from federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education, it is also supported by PragerU, a media organization associated with a particular political viewpoint,” the department said in a statement. The department said that it had partnered with Westfield State University to host the Freedom Truck to “provide a free, educational, and family-friendly opportunity for community engagement.”“We believed the mobile museum would offer a unique way for residents to learn about American history while allowing officers to connect with the community we serve. At no time was our participation intended to endorse or promote any political ideology, organization, or viewpoint,” it added. The department said that “members of both the University and Westfield community perceive[d] our involvement differently.”Some left-wing commentators have accused the Freedom Trucks of providing a “skewed tribute” to America’s history. A reporter for the Guardian, Ed Pilkington, visited one of the mobile museums and wrote that the bulk of the exhibits are “devoted to the founding of the nation and the glory of defeating the tyrannous British king, with more recent history treated in cursory fashion.”By Mr. Pilkington’s telling, the exhibits are skewed toward a certain viewpoint, as he wrote that “America is depicted as a Christian nation.” The “prevailing wind,” he wrote, is “towards the white men who led the charge to nationhood, with minor roles granted to their women dutifully holding the fort back home, and on God as the source of the country’s greatness.” He said that an AI-generated George Washington tells guests that “our rights are a gift from God,” while a placard on another exhibit states, “The truth that each person is made in the image and likeness of God is the basis of human equality.”Liberal commentators have repeatedly suggested that conservatives are pushing a Christian narrative of America’s founding when they state that human rights come from God. Last month, MS NOW’s Katy Tur asked if House Speaker Mike Johnson was “putting God over the Declaration of Independence” when he said that “our rights do not derive from government. They come from you, our creator and heavenly father.” Mr. Johnson wrote on X that “The Declaration literally proclaims the self-evident truth that our rights come from our Creator.”An associate professor of social studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Christopher Martell, wrote on X that he planned to boycott the “propaganda trucks” and urged others to do the same.“They are not telling an honest history of this nation, but instead portraying one-sided perspectives and outright myths,” he insisted. Left-wing commentators have ridiculed Freedom 250’s planned events. Comedian John Oliver said on Sunday that the organization’s planned concert series was a “stacked lineup of people that you haven’t thought about since 2009.”“Honestly, that sounds less like America’s 250th birthday and more like the playlist at Rhonda’s 50th. The only really surprising thing about that lineup is that there’s not a special appearance from the ShamWow guy and the Gushers kid whose head turned into a raspberry,” he joked.On Monday, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, Rachel Reisner, said that more than 30 gallons of fuel spilled on the National Mall and seeped into cisterns meant to collect groundwater. Ms. Reisner told NBC News the generators were used to light a recent event and that the leak was the result of vandals “tampering” with them. As Freedom 250’s events have been mired by controversy, another organization, America250, which was set up by Congress in 2016, has been planning other events, such as community celebrations known as America’s Block Party, and Giving 4th, which the organization says it hopes will “transform Independence Day into the largest single day of charitable giving in U.S. history.”
