WASHINGTON — Iran yesterday detained Haleh Esfandiari, the director of the Middle East Program at the Smithsonian Institution’s Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, according to center president and director Lee Hamilton and Ms. Esfandiari’s husband. Ms. Esfandiari, a dual American-Iranian citizen who has lived in America for more than 25 years, has been under virtual house arrest since last December, when the government refused to allow her to leave Iran.
