FBI Raids Home of Weldon’s Daughter, Friend

MEDIA, Pa. — The FBI raided the homes of Rep. Curt Weldon’s daughter and a close friend yesterday as it investigates whether the congressman improperly helped the pair win lobbying and consulting contracts. Agents searched four locations in the Philadelphia area and two in Jacksonville, Fla., an FBI spokeswoman in Washington, Debbie Weierman, said. The congressman’s home and his offices were not among the locations searched, she said.

Ex-FDA Commissioner Charged in Federal Court

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner who resigned after two months on the job, Lester Crawford, was charged in federal court for conflict of interest and making false statements related to his investments. Mr. Crawford, 68, falsely stated in a 2004 government filing that shares of Sysco Corp. and Kimberly-Clark Corp. had been sold when he and his wife continued to hold them, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor said.

U.S. To Create First Bank For Umbilical Cord Blood

WASHINGTON — The federal government is moving aggressively to create the first national banking system for umbilical cord blood, which contains the same potentially lifesaving stem cells as bone marrow — but with a distinct advantage. They don’t require that the donor and recipient share the same group of genes essential to getting a transplant to take.As a result, they are less likely to be rejected by the recipient. “We can find donors for everyone. When I say everyone, upward of 90 percent,” Dr. John Wagner who works at the University of Minnesota Cancer Center said.

Disney To Ban Trans Fat From Theme Park Food

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Co. will begin serving more nutritionally balanced meals at its domestic theme parks and will sign movie and other endorsement deals only with restaurants that limit fat and sugar in menu items, the company said yesterday. Trans fats will be eliminated from meals at domestic parks by the end of 2007, Disney said.
