ATLANTA — The estate of Martin Luther King Jr. wants to stop the auction of a faded green folder containing letters, notes, and speeches believed to be written by the slain civil rights leader. Isaac Newton Farris of the King Center said, “Unless somebody has documentation that [King] has given them this, the King estate owns that.”
The collection had sat in the basement of a King friend for nearly 40 years. The woman, who has not been publicly identified, said she got the papers in a debt settlement with a radio station connected to King, according to Gallery 63 in Atlanta, which is hosting the April 15 auction.
