A man brought a pellet gun onto the campus of City College and briefly held a woman hostage yesterday before he was arrested, police sources said.

Kirk Hanley, a 21-year-old Brooklyn resident, followed the woman, 20, a City College student, into an administrative office on campus, where he grabbed her and held a 45-caliber pellet gun to her head. The woman had notified campus security, who called police, when she noticed Mr. Hanley following her. Police arrived soon after.

Officials said that when police officers ordered Mr. Hanley to drop the weapon, he turned it on himself but did not fire.

Police later found that he had been carrying suicide notes. He was taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Mr. Hanley has been charged with reckless endangerment, possession of a loaded firearm, and kidnapping, police said.
