Fernando Ferrer is bringing in a big gun: The chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Howard Dean, is scheduled to be in Manhattan this afternoon to campaign with the Democratic mayoral candidate.

When Mr. Ferrer won the Democratic primary earlier this month, Mr. Dean sent his congratulations, as did other Democratic leaders such as Senators Kerry and Edwards. Today will be the first time a high-ranking out-of-town Democrat stands side by side with the Democratic nominee for New York City’s top job.

The two will first appear together outside of Louis D. Brandeis High School on the Upper West Side to proclaim mistakes Mayor Bloomberg has made on the education front and say how, if elected, Mr. Ferrer would fix them.

The event will come just a day after one of Mr. Bloomberg’s top supporters, Herman Badillo, bashed Mr. Ferrer on education. It also comes a day after another top Democrat, Senator Clinton, stood with Mr. Bloomberg at a ribbon cutting ceremony just a week after she professed her support for Mr. Ferrer.

A Ferrer spokeswoman, Christy Setzer, said Mrs. Clinton’s appearance yesterday was inconsequential.

“Freddy is, of course, proud to have the support of Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the support of both of New York’s senators,” she said. “As Senator Clinton said when she endorsed Freddy last week, she believes he’s a better choice for New York.”

After the high school appearance, Messrs. Ferrer and Dean will shake hands outside an Upper West Side subway station.
