The city’s Fire Department is requesting $60 million in federal funds to update their preparedness for terrorist attacks, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said at a city council hearing yesterday.
After reviewing the department’s Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness Strategy, Council Member Miguel Martinez, chairman of the Fire and Criminal Justice Services Committee, questioned the department’s preparedness for a terrorist attack in subways.
Mr. Scoppetta said the money will go toward training and technical equipment including wireless enhancements for electronic command boards, a GIS scanner, and competency based training in hazardous materials, emergency medical squad, and CBRN, a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear training group.
