ROCHESTER — Freezing rain coated trees, cars and roads across upstate New York with as much as a half-inch of ice yesterday, knocking out power to more than 115,000 homes and businesses. The hazardous wintry mix was blamed for a truck-car collision that killed three people near Syracuse.
From Buffalo east to Syracuse, rain combined with sub-freezing cold, encasing surfaces with ice that averaged between a quarter-inch and a half-inch in thickness, meteorologists said.
The weight of the ice snapped tree limbs and took down wires, knocking out electricity to 94,000 National Grid customers from Buffalo to Albany, utility spokesman Tom Corbett said.
