An American soldier from Queens Village, N.Y., was killed in Afghanistan on October 29 by an improvised explosive device that detonated while he was on a reconnaissance patrol in the southern Afghan city of Kajaki, the Department of Defense announced yesterday.

Jeffrey Calero, 34, was a member of the elite Green Beret unit within the Army National Guard and was based in Springfield, Mass. Calero also served six years on active duty in Korea and was currently on his second deployment in Afghanistan.

Calero, who graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1995 with a degree in mechanical engineering, was promoted posthumously to the rank of major. He has received 20 medals, badges, and awards from the Army, according to his Army Special Operations Command biography.
