Police are searching for a man they say went on a wild rampage around noontime yesterday, killing the mother of a woman he dated, wounding a teenage relative of his ex-girlfriend, and killing the slain woman’s dog.
The violence allegedly erupted when the suspect, whom police identified as Pierre Carrenard, 35, went to the residence of his ex-girlfriend’s mother, at 976 E. 43rd St. in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. First, Mr. Carrenard allegedly stabbed the “little” dog, one neighbor, Dorothy Williams, recounted. Police said the suspect stabbed the woman, Esperance Labidou, 53, numerous times and slashed the face of the 16-year-old girl, whose name police did not release. The woman died at the scene, police said, and the teenager – who was variously identified as the niece of Ms. Labidou and as her daughter – was taken to Kings County Hospital Center in stable condition. The dog was found dead in the home.
Mr. Carrenard was born in America, his family members said, but his father and uncle hail from Haiti.
The suspect’s family seemed calm about an hour after police released Mr. Carrenard’s picture to the press.
Mr. Carrenard’s uncle, Joseph Walker, described him as “a quiet guy.” Although Ms. Labidou’s neighbors suggested otherwise, Mr. Walker said the nephew, a stockbroker, lived with his girlfriend, whom he had dated for a few years.
Mr. Carrenard’s father, Iguad Carrenard, said the allegations against his son were surprising. The father said he had never met his son’s girlfriend – a 25-year-old woman, whose name was not immediately available – and acknowledged that he and his son did not maintain a close relationship. Iguad Carrenard is also the father of another son and a daughter, both in their twenties. He ended a telephone conversation with The New York Sun when he said he had to leave for work.
Yesterday’s attack was not the first that Pierre Carrenard is accused of. On July 12, he allegedly assaulted the former girlfriend. Police arrested him the next day on that charge and on the woman’s complaint of criminal mischief, for activity that allegedly occurred last November.
Ms. Williams, the neighbor across the street, said she and Ms. Labidou were friendly particularly through their block association. According to Ms. Williams, Mr. Carrenard and his girlfriend broke up, and “that is what caused this whole thing.”
Ms. Williams and another area resident said Ms. Labidou would wake early in the morning, put on some kind of security guard-like uniform, and wait for a vehicle to pick her up for the day. According to Ms. Williams, Ms. Labidou has a twin sister, who is quite ill. Ms. Williams cut an interview short to tend to the mourning family outside.
The other neighbor, Fryda Pierre, described Ms. Labidou as “the nicest person you would’ve ever known.”
Ms. Labidou had a long history in the neighborhood. She moved into her one-family home in the 1980s, Ms. Pierre said, only a few years after Ms. Pierre moved into hers.
Police asked anyone with knowledge of the whereabouts of Pierre Carrenard to call CrimeStoppers, at 1-800-577-TIPS.
