Police are searching for suspects after a gun battle in Brooklyn that left one dead and four injured.
According to police officials, the shooting involved an unknown number of attackers. It occurred at about 1 a.m. yesterday in a courtyard outside 969 Gates Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where a large crowd was gathered for a barbecue party inside a tent.
“It was a rapid succession of shots,” a resident of the building who heard the incident from her apartment, Wilhelmenia Best, 60, said in an interview yesterday. “After that, the music stopped, people started screaming, and that was it — it was all over quick.” Police arrived within minutes of the attack, witnesses said.
After being shot, Zeanie White, 21, was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. A 19-year-old woman was hit in the torso by the gunfire and taken to the same hospital in critical condition, and a 20-year-old woman was shot in the arm and grazed in the head. Police said she is in stable condition.
A 33-year-old man took a bullet in the arm and is in stable condition as well. Another man was shot once in the leg and once in the torso. He is in Kings County Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police, who say the motives behind the shooting are unknown, did not release the names of the wounded.
In a separate incident, police arrested Habika Hickman, 30, in connection with the fatal stabbing of her neighbor yesterday morning in an apartment at 330 E. 22nd St. in the Kensington section of Brooklyn.
Police did not release the name of the 30-year-old female victim, who was pronounced dead on arrival at Kings County Hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds. Criminal charges are pending.
