A Grammy nominated rap artist was arraigned on charges of attempted murder yesterday for allegedly shooting a woman in the Meatpacking District, officials said.
Remy Smith, 26, whose stage name is Remy Ma, was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and granted bail of $250,000 in the shooting of 23-year-old woman on Saturday at about 4 a.m. Ms. Smith, who is from the Bronx, pled not guilty to the charges.
Police sought Ms. Smith for questioning after finding the victim, who prosecutors said was an acquaintance of the suspect, shot twice in the stomach on 14th and Washington streets. Investigators found Ms. Martin’s sports-utility vehicle several blocks away from the incident after it had been involved in a car crash, police said. Ms. Smith was arrested on Saturday after turning herself in to authorities.
“I ask everyone to keep an open mind,” Ms. Smith’s attorney, Scott Leemon, told the Associated Press. “Things are not always as they seem. And let’s wait and see how the facts play out.”
Ms. Smith garnered a Grammy nomination in 2004 for the hit song “Lean Back,” in which she was a member of the group called the “Terror Squad.”
