Shooter of Two in East Village Surrenders to Police

Two individuals are hospitalized after a gunman opened fire in the East Village during a dispute this morning.
The incident took place at about 8:30 am, police said, when a dispute between residents of a building on E. 7th St. and Avenue D escalated into violence. One of the men pulled out a handgun, and as the other man fled, shot him six times. As the attacker fired wildly, a stray bullet flew through a glass storefront at a nearby deli and struck a worker at the counter from behind. The shooter than hopped in a car and sped away from the scene. Both shooting victims are expected to survive, police said.
Shortly after the attack, the suspect drove to a nearby police station and turned himself in, telling the officers there that he had shot someone, police said. A firearm, which police described as similar to a Tec-9 handgun, was recovered from his car outside the precinct. Police are investigating whether the man who turned himself in is the shooter and whether the gun was used in the attack.
