PRINCIPAL INDICTED ON SEX ABUSE CHARGES
A Manhattan assistant principal was indicted yesterday on charges of abusing seven students at Norman Thomas High School from June 2003 to July 2004.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Juan Taveras was first arrested on July 28 for sexually abusing two of his students. Mr. Taveras was then re-arrested and charged with the abuse of a third student.
Mr. Taveras was released on bail after each arrest.
More recent investigations have turned up grounds for more charges.
New victims have come forward, and investigations into the high school’s Summer Youth Employment Program disclosed that Mr. Taveras had manipulated the payroll records to allow students who had stopped showing up at the program because of Mr. Taveras’s abuse to continue to be paid with city money, the D.A.’s office said.
Mr. Taveras is charged with multiple counts of forcible touching, sexual abuse, criminal sexual acts, endangering the welfare of a child, attempted forcible touching, attempted sexual abuse, tampering with a witness, obstructing governmental administration, and falsifying business records.
Mr. Taveras was scheduled to appear in court on August 6, but failed to appear.
