An alleged robber is hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a run-in with an off-duty correction officer, police said yesterday.

According to police, Efrain Rivera, 30, approached the officer, who was parking his Suzuki motorcycle in a garage, at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday at Avenue T and East 11th Street in Brooklyn. Armed with a pistol, Mr. Rivera allegedly attempted to rob the officer, sparking a struggle between the two during which the assailant was shot once in the face. Wounded in his right cheek, Mr. Rivera attempted to flee but was chased down and subdued by the correction officer. Mr. Rivera was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he is in stable condition, police said. The officer was treated for minor injuries. Mr. Rivera is being charged with assaulting a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, robbery, grand larceny, and menacing.

Police are searching for a suspect in a second, unrelated incident involving a correction officer that took place Sunday in Brooklyn. At about 2 that morning, the officer was standing next to his car at a gas station when a car pulled up carrying two men, police said. When one of the men exited the vehicle, entered the officer’s car, and brandished a firearm, the officer took out his own weapon and opened fire, fatally wounding the suspected carjacker. The man’s accomplice is said to have ran up to his fallen comrade and removed his firearm before fleeing the scene. Police are asking the public for help in locating the suspect.
