A power failure caused by an uninvited cat forced the cancellation yesterday of a luncheon at a catering hall in Queens where Mayor Bloomberg was to deliver a speech.
“We were told that a cat had somehow gotten into the building” and blew the transformer, William Egan, executive vice president of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, which was conducting the event in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, said.
Emergency lights powered by a generator dimly lit the building, but the elevators had shut down and the main lights could not be turned on. Mr. Egan said the long climb up 14 flights of stairs to the luncheon room forced the last-minute cancellation.
It was unclear whether the cat was injured or killed. It also was not known what was done with the corned beef and cabbage for the more than 400 guests.
